Recreational sports are specially designed for people with disabilities. Boulder Valley also offers Unified Education classes open to students with special needs and peers who serve as mentors.

Dixon — who teaches a mixed physical education class at Monarch High for students with special physical needs — recommended ending athletic activities for all high schools in BVSD.

Dixon, who is also a team athlete, said BVSD-sponsored events include basketball tournaments in the winter and Ninja Warrior tournaments in the spring.

"We're bringing in an organization, the National Sports Center for the Disabled, and they have a ninja system," he said. "They run and help the kids."

In total, 100 students participated in the soccer tournament with an equal number of classmates and parents on hand to help cheer on the participants.

In addition to the road, the combined players are given more help, which is the higher level of the ball. One participant also brings along his trusty dog for practical support.

"It's a great opportunity for them to come together," said Physical Education Director Aubrey Yeh. "I've seen some kids from different schools recognize each other and say, "Hi, nice to meet you."
