The jet fighter generations of the category were created to separate the major technological steps in the historical development of the jet fighter. The term generation first appeared in the 1990s, according to the Royal Australian Air Force's Air Force Development Center bulletin: "to understand the leaps and bounds in the performance of jet fighters brought about by major advances in aircraft design, avionics and weapons systems." and recommends that a "generational transition of jet fighters be implemented when technological innovations cannot be incorporated into existing aircraft through upgrades" and retrofits.

But what are the criteria for defining a generation of fighters and an example (or several) of each generation?

'The first jet fighters, developed at the end of World War II. Apart from the type of engine, they differ little from propeller planes,' says Matthew Bekaert, aviation expert, on Quora. 'Key factors:

'Examples of Generation 4.5, pushing Generation 4 even further with EASA radars, radar reflection reduction technology, networking, etc.: Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, MiG-35, SU-30, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

'The generations are of course a little fuzzy, an upgraded Gen 3 jet can easily be mistaken for a Gen 4. An early Gen 4 like the F-16 is not the same as the latest Rafale.'

Different authorities have identified different technological leaps as the most important, dividing the development of hunters into different numbers of generations. Five generations are now widely recognized, and the sixth is underway.

In 1990, aviation historian Richard P. Hallion proposed that by then jet fighters should be classified into six types.

F 22 Raptor > Air Force > Fact Sheet Display

Another five hundred schemes have since been described up to about the same period, although the lines of demarcation between these areas vary. Taylor and Guilmartin name four; subsonic, transonic, supersonic and Mach 2, and adds a "new" fifth generation with the ability to multiply and ends with types such as the F-16 and MiG-29.

A NASA web publication divides jet development into five stages; pioneer (straight wing), swept wing, transonic, 1960s and 1970s onwards, culminating in types such as the F-15, F-16 and AV-8A.

In the 1990s, differential division came into use in Russia, where a "fifth generation" fighter was proposed as a countermeasure to the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. In contrast, the previous fourth generation filled the void of the F-15/16 era.

This effectively reduced the previous classifications to three categories. In 2004, Aerospaceweb listed one such division into five generations.

Sixth Generation Fighter

The exact criteria for the different stages of generation are not universally agreed upon and are the subject of some controversy. For example, Lockheed Martin applied the term "fifth generation" to its F-22 and F-35 aircraft, but was challenged by its competitors Eurofighter GmbH and Boeing IDS.

It has been suggested that Lockheed Martin "labeled the F-35 a fifth-generation fighter jet in 2005, a term it borrowed from Russia in 2004 to describe the F-22," or that the post-Cold War era, low-. the Saab Grid's cost approach should qualify it as a sixth-generation jet.

Now it is customary to recognize five masks, the fifth representing the last surrender in service (as of 2012).

Future types are expected to have more capabilities at an early stage of development and will be called the sixth generation.

Japan And Britain In Talks On Joint Fighter Jet Development

The earliest jet fighters appeared during and after the final years of World War II. They were most similar to their piston-powered contemporaries, with flat, unbrushed wings and made of wood and/or light alloy. (The Me 262 had a slightly swept wing, but this was done mainly for balance, and the sweep was deliberately kept too small to have a significant aerodynamic effect.

) They had little or no avionics, and manually controlled guns were their primary armament. The Heinkel He 162 and Gloster Meteor were also in service during the war, while types such as the de Havilland Vampire and the Lockheed F-80 were still undergoing processing until wartime operational service.

The introduction of the swept wing made it possible to achieve transonic speeds, but maneuverability at these speeds was limited. These aircraft were generally intended for the role of air-altitude interceptors.

Notable types who participated in the Korean War 1950-53. include the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 and the North American F-86 Sabre. The Hawker Hunter appeared too late for the war, but was used extensively and participated in several later ones.

Korean War 1950-1953. it required a major rethink. Cannons were unsuitable for such high speeds, so the need for a multipurpose combat support capability was rediscovered. Interceptor types developed after the war used afterburner engines to give Mach 2 performance, and radar and infrared missiles greatly improved their accuracy and firepower. American Ctury series such as the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, as well as the Russian MiG-21, the Glish Electric Lightning and the French Dassault Mirage III were typical of this era. Many types would soon be affected by adjustments to support roles in combat, some of which would lead to new variants of multiple surrenders.

The next generation of fighters has been designed from the ground up to be multi-role. They were expected to carry a wide range of weapons and other lethal means, such as air-to-surface missiles and laser-guided bombs, and to be able to engage in air-to-air interception.
