Long slide, standard, compact, and compact, Glock offers an incredibly wide range of pistols. And some of their subcompact pistols stand out from the competition.

But don't let their small size fool you—in some cases, they're more powerful than their full-size counterparts.

This compact Glock is quite light, weighing less than 27 ounces with an unloaded magazine. This relatively low center of gravity is achieved in part due to the Glock's polymer frame, which is a lightweight yet durable construction that does not sacrifice strength to achieve the center of gravity.

Weight aside, one of the most notable features of the G29 is the pistol cartridge it is chambered in. While compact pistols tend to go for smaller and less powerful cartridges like the 9x19mm or even the smaller .380, the G29 goes the other way: it's chambered for a massive 10mm auto cartridge.

The FBI developed the 10mm auto after the 1986 FBI shooting in Miami that killed two FBI agents and injured five agents. An investigation into what went wrong during the infamous shooting concluded that the LAPD officers involved in the shooting were armed with fairly low-powered weapons, prompting the development of the 10mm automatic. Needless to say, it packs a punch.

Despite the large 10mm auto cartridge, standard G29 magazines hold 10 rounds, with a higher capacity 15 round optional, though they somewhat negate the G29's compactness. The barrel length is 96 millimeters or 3.78 inches.

The G29 has a bold check pattern that allows for a secure grip. The gun also features finger grooves and a beavertail-style backguard, which allows for a high, tight grip – necessary when shooting the powerful 10mm automatic cartridge.

Like all Glocks, the G29 features the company's Safe Action system, a proprietary three-point safety system consisting of a trigger guard, trigger guard, and drop safety. You can read more about the Safe Action system here and it's well worth the effort.

G29 10mm Review

The Glock G29 may be one of the most powerful subcompact pistols on the market. The large 10mm Auto cartridge with a large 10 or 15 round magazine puts an incredible amount of firepower in the hands of the shooter and is significant for a pistol the size of the G29.

Not Strong: The G29 packs a huge punch and is a good choice for a small but powerful subcompact pistol.

When you press the shutter button. However, sometimes reliability is not enough. Sometimes reliability needs to be combined with stopping power. If you're looking for a combination of stopping power and reliability, the Glock G29 10mm is the answer.

The Glock G29 is basically the 10mm G19 and Glock's "compact 10mm" pistol. Although the G29 is actually about ¼ inch shorter than the G19, the reality of the G29 is the 9mm G19 that has eaten at a pasta bar too many times. The 10mm G29 is Glock's most powerful compact pistol, capable of producing 600-800 ft.-lbs. energy according to the projectiles it feeds. Not bad considering you have 10+1 shots - that's a lot of power and firepower in a very small concealable package.

The development of the 10mm cartridge is actually an interesting story that dates back to the 1970s. The idea was a high-powered, flat-firing semi-auto cartridge that would work in a 1911 pistol and basically deliver the ballistics of .357 to .44 Magnum (medium weight loads). Finally, Jeff Cooper, yes Scout Rifle, got involved in development when Norma started making ammo in the early 1980s. Feeling a little more out of place on the streets, the FBI briefly adopted the 10mm round, but with full impact loads that were fired first.

The fact was that 90% of the agents felt uncomfortable shooting and handling the larger and significantly more powerful 10mm motorized weapons. Ammunition manufacturers responded with the 10mm Lite case, which basically reduced the power to about a .40 S&W load. However, the FBI and the public wanted a smaller format with less power than what the 10mm ring provided. Smith & Wesson thought this was a waste of unused powder room for the longer 10mm brass and developed the 10mm short, or .40 S&W designation. The round provided everything the FBI specifications wanted in a form that would fit the smaller 9mm pistol format.

Current Hornady and other 10mm cartridges are not neutered to the extent of "LITE" cartridges, but they could certainly be loaded hotter, as we see with the more powerful Buffalo Bore, Federal, and Liberty Ammunition cartridges. Current 10mm cartridges are still far more powerful than the .40 S&W. .40 S&W cartridges generally produce about 450 feet per pound. of energy and the 10mm typically produces about 550 ft.lbs. i.e. about 20% more power.
