Ghost Glock Parts - Authorities around the city and in Sonoma County keep registration numbers of guns that do not have serial numbers and therefore cannot be traced.|

With the problem of ghost guns on the rise not only in California, but nationwide, my editors wanted me to show how easy it is to get your hands on a firearm that has no serial number and cannot be traced.

"Glocktober is here!" an email posted in my inbox from an outfit called JSD Supply on Oct. 1.

How Our Triggers Work

The Pennsylvania-based company is one of the largest do-it-yourself manufacturers to make so-called "ghost guns," a term for firearms that do not have serial numbers and therefore cannot be fired. Some removed the serial number, others assembled the kit or even made it with a 3D printer.

Although these guns are about a decade old, law enforcement officials in Sonoma County — and across the country — have recently noticed a dramatic increase in the number of ghost guns being used in violent crime. The problem is very serious in California, which in Oct. 13 has thrown its weight behind a lawsuit against a group of three companies that produce and sell ghost weapons.

After three illegal firearms in 2018, then 10 in 2019, Santa Rosa police seized 15 more last year. As of Wednesday, said Sgt. Chris Mahurin, the police recovered 37 ghost guns - more than a quarter of all the guns they collected for evidence purposes.

Since Oct. 13, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has seized 28 ghost guns in the past year, said Sgt. Juan Valencia. That's up from the 23 they collected last year. He said most of the guns are related to drugs and gang members.

Around the state, communities are seeing a similar increase in seizures, which the Los Angeles Police Department describes as an epidemic with deadly consequences.

In 2013, one of the guns used in the shooting at Santa Monica College was an AR-15; and a Tehama County gunman who is prohibited from owning firearms killed five and wounded nine others in 2017 with an illegal homemade gun.

To help us better understand this issue, the editors of the Press Democrat asked me to buy and collect ghost weapons. They have many questions, but the main reason is this: How easy is it to buy, and build one of these weapons?

At The Press Democrat, our editors began discussing ways to explore the rise of gun violence in a way that readers can relate to and easily understand.

But to solve or explain a problem, you have to understand it, and frankly, we don't understand much about ghost weapons.

To get to the bottom of this issue, we asked one of our veteran reporters, Austin Murphy, to do two things: tell readers how serious the problem is and make guns without serial numbers accessible.

Shopping online, I have no problem ordering a small receiver, or frame, from a gun. In a separate transaction, I requested a finishing kit for the gun, including a slide, barrel and trigger mechanism - "Everything needed to finish your own gun like a pro, without paperwork," the supplier promised.

Both packages arrived at my door a few days after I ordered them. Natural gun laws, for this poor reporter, are more of a lift. Even with the help of two friends, it took about a day longer than I expected.

But all in all, it took less than eight hours, spread over several days, to build an efficient, lethal weapon.

That makes some sense - I've never owned a firearm - than handed over, in a recent expense report, a $109.98 charge for a Polymer80 PF940C small pistol receiver - basically a Glock 19 knockoff.

But I still need a slide, barrel and other parts of the gun completely. That's when the sticker shock hit. It looks like the parts will cost in the region of $450.

Youtube Banned 'ghost Gun' Videos. They're Still Up

To the rescue came JSD Supply, based in Prospect, Pennsylvania. With the awesome Glocktober sale, I scored a PF940C "Complete Construction Kit" - minus the frame I already have - for $319.

To legally carry a homemade firearm in California, you must apply to the state Department of Justice for a unique serial number. Although I'm jumping on the bandwagon, most people who buy and build ghost weapons aren't - for the simple, obvious reason that they have to fall behind in the investigation.

Under JSD Supply's online "terms and conditions", customers are asked to prove that they have never been convicted of a crime, or domestic violence, or "under thought institutions or judged to be disabled" and they have. not "currently under a court order preventing you from stalking, threatening, or harassing a child or intimate partner."

Still, the company can be more out of favor with buyers who want firearms, but they can't do a background check for exactly the things mentioned above. He asks the question on his website: "Why build your own gun?"

And other gun users, come and answer: "You go to the gun store, fill out a bunch of forms. They do a background check, and depending on your state, you might have to wait a while."

By ordering from JSD, "You'll have 80 percent down and all the parts you need to complete the gun shipped right to your door. No paperwork. No order, no way to track. Your purchase."

Because my three brothers never tire of remembering me, it is not easy for me. I'm a Cub Scout whose Pinewood Derby rig wobbles at the finish line with no wheels. I shot twice in my life. And now I have to... build one?

The P80's white cardboard box with the PF940C's "bottom receiver" arrived in the mail with a nice sticker, but no instructions. For instructions, I went to the Polymer80 website and clicked on "Manual". To correctly load the holes for the various pins, I need a drill with a cross-head vise, a necessity that does not appear in my modest tool collection.

Feeling nervous as I checked the instructions, I sent my neighbor, Nathaniel, who had several weapons and access to important offices. The next day we hurried to his shop.

Calling the room is successful. Polymer80 is very nice - shows the steps by putting a jig that holds the bottom of the gun so the holes go in the right place.

Ghost Guns: I 3d Printed A Glock To See How Far Homemade Weapons Have Come

It took a long time to cut and grind it, and the "barrel block" softened. If you use a drill knife, an X-acto knife, then some sandpaper to finish the job, we use a nipper to cut out the rectangles of polymer that sit in the way of where we need to sink the rail. Metal stirrer , then , before block block.

Setting up the files at the same time during this process - which is actually more painstaking than Polymer80 led me to believe - Nate said that the time required to assemble this gun, in a way, served as "his personal rest time. ".

Life, and other end-time processes, intervene. I finished the shot on my dining room table two weeks later.

I didn't realize when I placed my order that this gun was the same Polymer80 model used by a man who shot two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputies in the head last year. The attacker has a previous felony conviction. Both employees survived.

What Is A Ghost Gun And Are They Legal?

In response to the new law proposed by the Department of Justice in May to control ghost weapons, Ted Cruz, a lawmaker responsible for security in Texas, heard in a Senate Judiciary Committee that they are "virtually a problem" without requiring new rules.

"There's no spirit like a spirit gun. They're like guns. They run like guns. They kill like guns."

He said, "There is no such thing as a ghost gun." "They're like guns. They run like guns. They kill like guns."

Another gun made by Polymer80 was used in a triple homicide in Glendale in April 2019, according to a lawsuit filed by the city of Los Angeles against the company, along with the gun control advocacy group Everytown For Safety.
